PETS IN THE SALON. APPROPRIATE OR NOT?

Dear Billy:

I go to a salon that I absolutely love. The staff are all very friendly, and the location is really great. However I get a little bothered by people who bring their pets into a salon. Do you have any thoughts about this?

Sincerely,

Itching to know.

DEAR ITCHING TO KNOW.
Make no mistake about it. I'm an absolute pet LOVER. However I think it can concern a lot of people to have pets in the salon. Here in Los Angeles we deal with pets at the beach, at restaurants, and yes people do bring them into a salon. If a client is holding her dog in her lap while I am cutting her hair, one accidental jump from man's best friend can give my client the perfect assymetrical look that she did NOT come in for. Furthermore, I think the pets can be uncomfortable around groups of people, especially having to sit inside with nowhere to go really for a good 2-3 hours. Finally, I don't want accidents in my salon no matter how great or small, and neither do my other clients who come to enjoy a relaxing good time.
The salon smells nice, there are wonderful candles burning, and great coffee table books that clients enjoy reading. It's a relaxing experience. If a dog starts barking for any reason, it can be troublesome for other clients in the salon and make their experience not as nice.
My thought, just for the sake of the animals, and the courtesy of others, the salon may not be the best place to bring your pets.
Sincerely,
Billy Lowe.

Hi Billy,

Oh my gosh, this is so annoying to me.. having pets at places. I've seen them at business functions, too. Little lap dogs looking cute and cuddly. Nothing like shaking the hand of someone holding a dog and being scared momentarily of being bitten. Haven't yet! But alas, not going to change and it makes the world a more interesting place.
