5 minute hair - yes you can

Forget standing in front of the mirror for 30 minutes this busy season or the upcoming holidays. Celebrity hairstylist & beauty expert Billy Lowe shares quick and easy tips for getting your day going in a flash.

“First of all you need some of my favorite styling products.” Exclaims Lowe. His hot list includes Olivia Garden metal styling brushes, Gloss & Toss (of course) for ultimate polish & shine, Pureology Colour Max, Pureology Real Curl, Pureology Flexible Hold Styling Spray, and Osmo Clay (mattifying wax).

“I think hair should be easy.” he says. “It can either be flattering or distracting. Unless we spend a little time on it while getting ready, it will end up looking mismanaged and unkempt. If you’re fussing with your hair all day long, it may seem to others that you need to get your act together. I especially encourage my working professional clients to maintain a well groomed & polished look in the work place. It speaks ‘volumes’ about them as a person.” He continues.

Here are Lowe’s top tips for quick and easy hair, perfect for every day, or the upcoming holiday season.

1 – The classic ponytail will get you from a day at the park to an evening on Park Avenue. A low tie-back (gathered at the nape) with a side part in the front creates a classy and sophisticated look. This can be done in 2-3 minutes tops and you have a great look that is clean and polished. To hide the rubber band, use a strand from the pony tail and wrap around the rubber band to conceal. Secure with a bobby pin.

2 – If you have waves or curls, you don’t need to spend 30-45 minutes smoothing them completely. Let the back carry the wave or curl pattern, and smooth through the front area. It will all blend together nicely once the back air-dries and you’ll save a ton of time in the morning. Apply a light curl paste in the back (I recommend Pureology Real Curl), and a smoothing serum in the front (I recommend Gloss & Toss) to blow-dry the front smooth. Scrunch through the back and avoid over-styling the curls or you’ll end up with wiry looking ends. Use a light-hold spray to finish off and you’re out the door in 4-5 minutes.

3 – If you do blow-dry the hair 100%, remove 80-90% of the moisture in your hair before you even begin using your styling tools. There’s no sense in using a styling brush on wet hair before you remove a majority of the moisture. Hair doesn’t begin taking shape until it’s at the 80-90% dry stages. So just finger dry to get the water out (high temp, medium speed), quickly tame through the back with a large paddle brush, and spend the majority of time on the top and front sections. The front section is what really matters because it puts you “face forward.” You can always gather the back in a loose scrunchie or a low chignon.

“Using a variety of shapes and textures in your hair creates great movement. It doesn’t all have to be smooth and perfect.” Confirms Lowe. “Just have fun, be creative, and practice. It’s much easier than you think.”
